Another course record was threatened in the girl's D-2 race, as a pair of runners from West Branch Ogemaw Heights pounded the course early.

Abigail Nelkie and Jessica Kraft took aim on the two year old course record held by two time Class B/Division 2 champion Jamie Krzyminski of Corunna. Krzyminski ran 17:54 on this MIS course to take first in 1998.

Nelkie's 5:38 first mile left her all alone, with only teammate Kraft close behind. Nelkie, a senior, came through two miles at 11:33. Kraft and eventual third place finisher Carrie Smeltzer of Monroe Jefferson were second and third at that point. Kraft in 11:42 and Smeltzer in 11:44.

Nelkie ran strong from there, with ideas of another MIS record. Her drive for a record fell just short, but she had no arguments in taking the individual title, finishing in 18:05.

Teammate Kraft was second in 18:16 and Smeltzer finished third in 18:23.

For the second straight year, Middleville Thornapple Kellogg won the team competition, once again edging out Flint Powers Catholic. Kellogg finished with 170 points to 186 for Powers.
