BIG RAPIDS EDGES ST. CLAIR FOR TEAM VICTORY

With the possibility of a new course record looming early, Richland Gull Lake senior, Curtis Marlowe was focused.

The Class B-Division 2 course record was held by Corunna's Jarred Aldrich, who ran 15:12 here at MIS in 1998.

The individual race started fast, with Marlowe and 4 others cruising through the mile together.

The two mile was passed in 9:35 with most of the same pack still together.

For Marlowe, the dream of winning a state title finally came true.

"I've been thinking about this for so long." he said. "The last two years I got second to two different people. It just means so much to win it. I worked hard and paid my dues. I felt like I deserved it."

Marlowe's assault on the win and the record didn't come easy. He commented on that after the race.

"Toward the middle of the race, Ross (Caledonia's Tim Ross) was up there with me. I just kept pushing and kept pushing. I was tired, but this was my last school race and I wanted it more than anything."

For Marlowe, the work paid off as he moved away from Ross and held on for his first ever state championship and a new course record, finishing in 15:02.

Ross ened up as the runner up in 15:16, with Adam Ludwig of St. Joseph third in 15:27.

In the team race, Big Rapids earned their second ever state title by scoring 103 points to barley hold off St. Clair high school. St. Clair took home second place with 110.
