ROCHESTER
ADAMS THIRD
TEAM TITLE IN A ROW Jackson, MI 11/4/00 by
Scott
Collins & The Girl's D-1 race developed early with Rockford's dominance being felt. At the 1/2 mile there were three Rockford girls in the top 5. They were joined by Romeo's Teresa Bongiovanni in 6th, Three time defending champion Katie Boyles was hanging back in 8th. At the mile mark, Linsey Blaisdell, Kalin Toedebusch and Nicole Bohnsack of Rockford were 1-2-3. Teresa was right there with Katie Boyles still off the back of the pack. That pack came through the mile mark in 5:32, with Bohnsack holding the slight lead. At a mile and a half, Rockford was still 1, 2, 3, with Teresa 4th and Katie just behind in 5th. Romeo at this point had 4 girls in the top 25 -- Rockford, meanwhile had 7 in the top 25! The 2 mile point saw the same top 5, Katie just off the back. The 2 mile was passed in 11:21 at two miles Rockford's top three leading the way with Teresa in 5th. And in her usual and powerful fasion, Katie Boyles pulled away and hung on to win in 17:17.1. For Boyles, this capped off an incredible high school cross country career as she took home her fourth straight title. Early on though, with Rockford's powerful top three, another win didn't seem possible. "Coming into the back stretch, the Rockford girls were in front of me and I thought I was not going to do this. But then I made a decision. I've worked so hard all season and I'm not going to let my teammates down, I'm not going to let my coach down and I'm not going to let myself down. So I just went for it." One of those Rochester Adams teammates of Boyles was Sophomore Shannon Stanley, who came from practically nowhere to surprise everyone and finish second in 17:31.4. Rockford's dominance up front as a pack propelled them to the D-1 team title. This Rockford girl's team has been amazing over the years, winning their third straight Class A/Division 1championship. This has never before been accomplished by a girls team in A/1. Rockford could have very well been celebrating their fourth straight title as they finished as runners-up in the '97 race.
