Sacramento, CA -
July 16th
Deena Kastor made sure everyone knew who is the defending Olympic Tirals champion and the current American Record holder for the 10000 meters, when she took off from the rest of the field about a mile into the 6.2 mile race. Kastor never looked back and almost lapped the enitre field winning in 31:09.65 for a new Hornet Stadium record. Finishing about 49 seconds behind Kastor was Elva Dryer in 31:58.14 and Kate O'Neill in 32:07.25. In April Deena placed 2nd at the Olympic Marathon Trials to qualify for the Olympics and said she will not run the 10000 in the Olympics. She said "There was never a thought in my mind of doubling (competing in both the 10K and Marathon)." The fourth place finisher was University of Michigan and the 1997 NCAA XC Champion Katie McGregor. If Katie can get a 10000 meter Olympic A standard by August 9th she will join Elva and Kate on the US 10000 team. Katie said "After the first (half of the race), I knew we were off the "A" standard." Katie said she felt fit comint into the race. Katie said "I'll will probably go over to Europe and give the 10K one more shot." Michigan States's Jamie Krzyminiski ran 33:09.80 for 8th and Melissa White, Hansons-Brooks, finished 16th.
Day six at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track & Field proved to be a great day for Tim Broe who trains in Ann Arbor under Ron Warhurst. Tim out kicked the rest of the 5000 meter field to take home his first Olympic Trials championship. Tim ran the 5K in 13:27.36 for the win. Jonathon Riley ran 13:30.85 for 2nd and Bolota Asmeron ran 13:32.77 for 3rd. There is one wrinkle in Broe's win, he doesn't have the Olympic A or B standard time. Broe has until August 9th to run 13:25.40 for the B standard and 13:21.50 for the A Standard. Broe said "Usually, if it's a good race, the time will come with it. I'll race in two weeks in London at the Crystal Palace GP to get the A standard there." Riley has the A standard already, so he sits in an interesting position. Riley said "For me to qualify, he either has to run under 13:21 to get the "A" standard or slower than 13:25." Hansons-Brooks runner Mark Menefee finished 5th in 13:37.68.
In the Men's 1500 meter Nathan Robison won the first heat in 3:43.84 and in the second heat Alan Webb let up and Michael Stember won in 3:39.74. Paul McMullen wasn't able to kick enough in the first heat ending up 10th in 3:44.66, so he did not advance to the final on Sunday. McMullen said "I didn't have the foot speed at the end of the day tonight".
The women's 1500 meter will have University of Michigan's Lindsey Gallo and the former Michigan High School Division 3 XC champion Bethany Brewster in the finals on Sunday. Lindsey and Bethany will be running aganist a great field on Sunday with Jennifer Toomey, Amy Rudolph, Marla Runyan, Suzy Favor Hamilton and Shalane Flanagan also making the final.
