Day 5 Coverage

Sacramento, CA -
July 15th

Daniel Lincoln the University of Arkansas Alumni now running for Nike made sure that day five at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Track & Field ended with excitement. Daniel won with an 8:15.02 the tenth fast time in 2004 for the 3000m Steeplechase. Lincoln may want to make Sacramento his home course, in 2003 he won the NCAA 3000m Steeple and 10000 here at Hornet Stadium. He looked around with 2.5 laps to go and saw that it was just Famiglietti, Gary and himself. So Lincoln said "I waited for 1.5 laps and I tried to make as bold of a move as I could." He said "I got the gap I needed and i just had to hold on for the last lap and it all worked out." Going into the final Thursday night only Lincoln and Steve Slattery had the Olympic A standard time for the Steeple, but Anthoney Famiglietti and Robert Gary finished 2nd and 3rd with times of 8:17.91 and 8:19.46, which were under the 8:24.60 Olympic A standard. Gary and Famiglietti will join Lincoln as part of the 3000m steeple team headed to Athens. The 2004 NCAA Steeple champion Jordan Desilets out of Eastern Michigan University ran exactly what his coach John Goodridge and he planned, he said "My coach and myself planned out for 68's (seconds per lap)". Jordan finished in 6th place with a time of 8:24.62, just missing the Olympic A standard by .02 second. Jordan said "I can't complain over a 5 second PR." He felt great about closing on so many people at the end and said :I just ran out of track." He said that he felt "Smooth, relaxed and easy.". University of Michigan alumni John Mortimer finished right behind Jordan in 7th with a 8:24.92.

In the men's 1500m Quaterfinal Michael Stember won heat 1 and Eastern Michigan Alumni Paul McMullen was 2nd. In heat 2 Alan Webb (former U of Michigan runner) won with a time 6 seconds slower then heat 1 or 3. Heat 3 was won by Said Ahmed. The 1500 semi's will be Friday July 16th and the final on Sunday July 18th.

Marion Jones qualified for the Olympics in Athens on her second jump when she flew 23ft 4inches and she also took home the 2004 US Long Jump Championship. Grace Upshaw and Akiba McKinney will also join Marion in Athens. Grace jumped 22ft 5inches and Akiba jumped 21ft 6.75inches.

Baylor's Jeremy Wariner, the 2004 NCAA 400m champion, ran 44.37 to win the 400m final and run the fastest time in 2004 to date. Otis Harris and Derrick Brew finished 2nd and 3rd in 44.67 and 44.69 to join Wariner on the trip to Athens.
