Day 2 Coverage
Sacramento, CA -
July 10th
The second day of competition at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Track & Field added some more excitement when the the 2000 Olympic gold medalist in the 100 meter, Marion Jones, failed to qaulify for Olympics when she finished 5th in 11.14. Marion still has the 200 meter and the Long Jump left to try and qualify for Athens. That seemed to make bigger news then LaTasha Colander winning the race in 10.97. LaTasha will be joined in Athens by Torrie Edwards and University of Miami runner Lauryn Williams.
The Heptahlon was won by Shelia Burrell with 6194 points, 2nd was Tiffany Lott-Hogan with 6159 and Michelle Perry with 6126. The men's shotput team in set for Athens with Adam Nelson (21.64m), Reese Hoffa (21.14m) and John Godina (21.08m). The world leader in this event Christian Cantwell was not in sync and only had one fair throw at 20.51m, so he will not be going to Athens.
The men's 100m semi's and finals should provide some excitement with Maurice Greene, John Capel, Tim Montgomery, Shawn Crawford and Justin Gatlin all advancing to the semis for Day 3.
The men's and women's 800 meters finals are set for Monday July 12th. The men's race will feature Samuel Burley, Khadevis Robinson, Jonathan Johnson, Derrick Peterson and David Krummenacker. Central Michigan alumni Jeff Delong failed to qualify for the 800m final. The womens 800m will feature Jearl Miles-Clark, Hazel Clark and Nicole Teter.
