Edmonton,
Canada (08/07/01) - The Ethiopian women Derartu Tulu,
Berhane Adere, and Gete Wani swept Gold, Silver and Bronze
in the women's 10,000 Tuesday night in Edmonton, shutting
out Great Britians Paula Radcliffe. Radcliffe missed the
Bronze by 0.08 seconds. After taking out the first 5K
in 16:29, Tulu ran under 15:20 for the second 5K to finish
in 31:48.81, followed by Adere in 31:48.85, and Wani in
31:49.98. Americans Deena Drossin and Jennifer Rhines
finished in 11th (32:18.64) and 22nd (33:11.22) respectively.
Phil
McMullen the former Western Michigan star finished 15th
in the Decathlon with 8079 points. Phil placed 3rd in
the Decathlon 1500 meter with a time of 4:20.84. Teammate
Kip Janvrin finished 17th overall with 7905 points and
won the 1500 meter in 4:19.26.
Gabriela
Szabo of Roumanie won the 1500 Meter in 4:00.57 and was
followed by teammate Violeta Szekely in 4:01.70. Russia's
Natalya Gorelova finish with the bronze in 4:02.40.
Switzerlands
Andre Bucher grabbed the Gold in the 800 meter with a
time of 1:43.70. Wilfred Burgei of Kenya finished 2nd
in 1:44.55, followed by Poland's Pawel Czapiewski in 1:44.63.
Tonight's
action will include Haile Gebrselassie and American's
Abdirahman, Keflezighi, and Culpepper in the 10,000 at
11:30pm E.S.T.. Other finals tonight 3,000 Steeple (USA
Tim Broe), Men's High Jump, Womens 400 Hurdles, and the
Men's Discus.
