Canada (08/03/01) - The first day of the 8th IAAF
World Championships in Athletics was exciting and hot.
The first event kicked off at 8:45pm with the Men's Marathon,
the only event of the day. The U.S. team was represented
by Khalid Khannouchi (world record holder), David Morris
(former American record holder), Josh Cox, Eddy Hellebuyck,
and Michael Dudley (former Detroit Marathon winner). The
marathon provided an exciting finish with 5 runners separated
by just 45 seconds at the 40K mark, with Kenya's Biwott
in the lead by 1 second over Abera of Ethiopia. Abera
had the lead as the pair entered the stadium, just a step
ahead of Biwott. With the crowd cheering, Abera was able
to hold off Biwott during the last 300 meters. Abera took
the Gold in 2:12:42, Biwott the silver in 2:12:43 and
Italy's Baldini in 2:13.18. Ethiopia captured the team
title by placing their top 3 runners in the top 7 overall.
