If you love running and fast times Grand Rapids, Michigan is the place to be (Irish Jig 5K, Pietro's 5K, Old Kent River Bank Run, & Diemer 5K). Grand Rapids seems to have no trouble attracting Michigan's top road racers to it's fine city to see how fast they can go. Today was Pietro's Run Fasta Eat Pasta 5K, a month earlier the Irish Jig 5K in March had Paul Aufdemberg (14:48) out duel Brad Kirk (14:50) in the men's race. While Ann Stewart (16:54) and Jenny Goodpaster (16:58) both went under 17:00. These two 5K's have set the stage for the Old Kent River Bank Run in May, which will attract not only the top U.S. runners, both also top international runners to see if they can set another world record for 25K. Once again race director, Mark Nader, must have put a call into Mother Nature. Friday night was rain, with the forecast for the rain to continue into Saturday morning. but Saturday morning for the race it was partly cloudy with the temp hovering around the 40 degree mark. 1519 finishers! In the men's 5K competition, In the American men's competition, Brad Kirk easily out distanced the rest of the American field Paul Aufdemberge was second in a time of 15:53, 20 seconds behind Kirk. The Men's Master vicitory goes to a U.S. Road Racing lengend Herb Lindsay. He ran an impressive 15:48. He won the Heart Care 5K a week earlier in Ann Arbor under some tough conditions. For the women, the fight for the finish would come down to the last quarter mile. Besty Haverkamp, who a month earlier took third at the Irish Jig today took home the win.
