Kelly Stewart has been living in Michigan ever since coming here from Michigan after running at Millersburg college in PA. There she was a standout runner and later used those talents and abilities with the Hanson/Brooks team. Read on to see her thoughts on her performance at Crim (58:11, 5:50 pace) and what she has planned for the future.
RM: What are your thoughts on your race at Crim? What were your goals heading into the race?KS: I didn't really have any high hopes for the race so my only goal was to run a PR. I would have liked to have run a little faster but all in all I was satisfied.
RM: How does having such a competitive field ahead of you, effect your race plans and strategy?KS: Actually I didn't officially register until race day (I contacted the race director about getting into the elite athlete start but she never got back to me) so I didn't really know what I was up against. I actually had to walk the first bit of the race so I just concentrated on doing my own thing and hoped for the best. I can't say I really had a race strategy other than to make it over the hills without falling apart.
RM: What are your goals for this training block? Do you have a race you are shooting for as an end to the training block?KS: I took a little time off after the Crim so I'm just getting back into the swing of things. I'd like to work on my speed. So I might try to do some cross country races but right now I'm just enjoying myself.
RM: How has your training been going so far? How much have you been running weekly? Any special workouts or favorite workouts you have done this training segment?KS: I usually get in 90-100 miles a week. I haven't had as much time as I'd like to really get in some quality training. I've been working a lot so most of my runs I'm out the door before 6:30am and then back for another between 6-8pm. I have enjoyed getting on the track and doing some fast stuff. A couple of my favorites are 800-1600 x 3 or 4 and 20x400.
RM: What are your running/racing plans for the spring/summer?
KS: I'd like to do another marathon in the spring but I guess I'll see.
