The Hein family captured two of the top 5 Class D places at the '98 Class D race at MIS. The two Galien team-mates helped their school to a 6th place team finish. The older Ronnie Hein took top honors as he ran the 5k course in a time of 16:06, 15 seconds over runner-up Nathan Shay of Central Lake. Shay's time was 16:21. Third overall went to Nathan Usher of Grass Lake, 4th to Ronnies brother Jimmy Hein and rounding out the top 5 was Aaron Romero of Detroit Holy Redeemer. For the elder Hein, this was a welcome surprise after some sub-par performances. "This feels really good", he said, "I've had a bad streak lately and this feels really good."

In team competition, the overall crown went to Bear Lake, paced by senior Brett Vanderveen who placed 9th. Bear Lake finished with 64 points, with Grass Lake i n second with 81. New Buffalo took third with 108 and Wolverine placed 4th with a total of 129 points.
