Update #1:
D4 Boys, Race Time: 10:00 a.m.

St. Louis started out the day as the first team champion with a total team score of 127, followed by Bellevue with a score of 165. Finishing third was Bear Lake scoring 167. This was St. Louis' second MHSAA Cross Country title. The first one was a Class C title in 1979. Junior Alex Best finished 14th, Senior Trevor Sova 20th, Max Ramirez 40th, Nick Davaloz 52nd and Zach Drater 60th for the St. Louis Division 4th State Champions.

The individual champion was a senior from Grand Rapids Covenant Christian, Matthew Hanko with a winning time of 16:14.7, followed closely by Loren Milbrath, then Mike Glinski. When asked how it felt to win his first state title, he said "Unbelievable, I just feel awesome it's hard to explain. It just feels so good". Hanko ran in third place most of the way. He went through the mile in 4:59.80 behind Milbrath's 4:58.35 and Glinski 4:59.65. And then 10:26 for the two, still in third behind Glinski (10:23.90) and Milbrath (10:24.65). Hanko finally took the lead in the last straight away right before the 3 Mile mark. Hanko has come along way from his sophomore year when he place 92nd at the state meet and last year's 15th place.

Top Five Teams: St. Louis, Bellevue, Bear Lake, Grand Rapids Covenant Christian, and Vandercook Lake

Top Five Individuals: Matthew Hanko, Loren Milbrath, Mike Glinski, Alex Harris, and Nick Swisher

Update #2:
D3 Boys, Race Time: 10:30 a.m.

In the closest team race thus far, Williamston edges out Grand Rapids West Catholic with a combined team score of 78 to GRWC's 83 points. The Division 3 boys Championship team had their top five runners all finish within 60 seconds of each other. Williamston was led by Matthew Lutzke the Division 3 runner-up in 15:50.50. Lutzke was followed by Daniel Nix in 13th, Christopher Pankow in 17th, Tyler Sharp in 36th and David Ash in 55th. This was Williamston's second team title, the first one was won in 2000.

The top six individuals were all within 4 seconds of one another, edging out the competition was Maverick Darling of Ovid-Elsie with a time of 15:49.9. Lutzke took 2nd, Mike Mayday 3rd in 15:51.30, Nick Tecca 4th in 15:52.10, Paul Grieve 5th and Kyle Smith 6th. Maverick was looking for a top 5 finish coming into the race Saturday morning, he was looking to improve on his 2004 8th place finish. When asked about his race plan, Maverick said "Just pace myself the first bit and then take care of it from there and keep moving up."

Top Five Teams: Williamston, Grand Rapids West Catholic, Jackson Lumen Christian, Lansing Catholic Central, and Erie Mason

Top Five Individuals: Maverick Darling, Matthew Lutzke, Mike Mayday, Nick Tecca, and Paul Grieve

Update #3:
D4 Girls, Race Time: 11:00 a.m.

Big Rapids Crossroads Academy took the women's division 4 state championship title with a score of 132. Traverse City St. Francis finished second, followed by Ann Arbor Greenhills. BR Crossroads Academy was led by Senior Rebecca Monroe in 5th and Junior Katie Thorne in 14th. When asked about the race Monroe said "I knew who I needed to beat, I felt really good".

The individual champion was a junior from Maple City Glen Lake, Marissa Treece, with a very impressive sub 18 minute time of 17:57.25, she dominated the competition from start to finish. On the win Marissa said "Its fun, I love it". Marissa went through the mile in 5:41 for a 3 second lead and then 11:32 at two miles for a 10 second lead. This is Marissa's second straight MHSAA Cross Country title, she has also won the 1600 & 3200 MHSAA Track titles in 2004 & 2005. She said "I felt good, but I was kind of scared if they were going to come back on me. I didn't know how quick they were." It turned out she had nothing to worry on Saturday November 5th, 2005. Marissa won by 39 seconds over Roger City freshman Kaylee Kreft.

Top Five Teams: Big Rapids Crossroads Academy, Traverse City St. Francis, Ann Arbor Greenhills, Southfield Christian and Saginaw Valley Lutheran

Top Five Individuals: Marissa Treece, Kaylee Kreft, Kylee Kubacki, Alexa Glencer, and Rebecca Monroe

Update #4:
D3 Girls, Race Time: 11:30 a.m.

A fifth, seventh, and tenth place finish helped propel Goodrich to their third division 3 championship in a row with a combined score of 118, finishing second was Jackson Lumen Christian, followed closely by Hillsdale. Goodrich's Kaitlin Omara (5th) led the way for her team in 18:44, followed by Kelsey Meyers (7th) in 18:51 and Kelsey Krych (10th) in 18:58.

Individual honors go to junior Mikal Beckman of Newaygo with a time of 18:03.6, she had been hoping to run under 18 for the day. When asked about the race Mikal said "It was awesome, I loved the pace that was set." The last few races Mikal had gone out to fast and had faded toward the end. She said "The first mile was what we were practicing for. So when I hit it, I knew that my second mile was going to be good." Mikal in only her second year of running was just hoping to break 20 minutes in the beginning of the season. As the season progressed she was able to break 19 minutes. When asked about winning, Mikal said "I'm going to have a smile on my face for a couple of days."

Top Five Teams: Goodrich, Jackson Lumen Christian, Hillsdale, Elk Rapids and East Jordan

Top Five Individuals: Mikal Beckman, Kristi Werner, Aubree Danielson, Davyn Ramsey, and Kaitlin Omara

Update #5:
D2 Boys, Race Time: 1:30 p.m.

With two runners in the top ten, Dexter takes it's fourth men's division 2 championship in a row with a score of 95. Bloomfield Hills Lahser takes home the runner-up trophy with a score of 130. Dan Jackson, Bobby April and Jason Bishop led the way for Dexter placing 4th, 8th and 19th overall.

Landon Peacock, the senior from Cedar Springs, who sat out the 2004 season after transferring schools ran the fastest time of the day by running 15:09.5. He was 3rd in the 2003 Division 3 championship race. Landon said "I wanted this state championship ever since I was a freshman. I guess it was my time to do it." Landon was hoping to run a sub-15 minute 5K, but he was happy with a 15:09 and a state championship. Landon will be running a race in Jackson next to qualify for a senior race in Ohio and then the Footlocker Regional in Wisconsin. When asked about the Footlocker Regional, Landon said "I'm a senior so now I'm going to give it all I got. It's your last year, it's your last chance to do something special."

Top Five Teams: Dexter, Lahser, Flint Powers Catholic, Sparta, and Coldwater

Top Five Individual: Landon Peacock, Patrick Grosskopf, Van Tate, Dan Jackson, and Ian Girard

Update #6:
D1 Boys, Race Time: 2:00 p.m.

Pinckney put only 2 guys in the top 50, but manages to hold off Ann Arbor Pioneer with a combined team score of 146.

Ryan Grau, Kalamazoo Central, came from 14th place as he entered the MIS infield to win the the Boys Division 1 title in a 15:34.25. Grau said "It was all mental, I just went for it." Seniors Grau and his teammate Steve Breisach, who finished 10th, trained together during the summer, both saw their hard work pay off on Saturday. A week before Breisach was the regional champion and Grau was the runner-up. Grau talking about regionals said "I wasn't feeling so good, but I had to stay focused and keep confident. My legs weren't there, I was a little off mentally." Grau will be looking to qualify for the Footlocker national meet in a few weeks.

Top Five Teams: Pinckney, Ann Arbor Pioneer, Rockford, Walled Lake Central, and Lake Orion

Top Five Individuals: Ryan Grau, Luke Heiman, Robbie Fisher, Dan Kapadia, and Jacob Wernet

Update #7:
D2 Girls, Race Time: 2:30 p.m.

Grand Rapids Christian destroys the competition with a combined team score of 108. The top three teams were all from Grand Rapids.

In the most exciting race of the day with the crowd cheering loudly Monroe Jefferson Junior Bekah Smeltzer took home her second individual title in a photo finish with sophomore Erin Lafave. Smeltzer was just five hundredths of a second in front of Lafave. Smeltzer's winning time was 17:43.95 for the second fast time of the day. Smeltzer said "I just saw the leaders and I said I need to get up with them", talking about early in the race. When asked about the finish Smeltzer said "Oh I was like I need to go, because I know that Erin was really strong. But I don't know who won it, it's a toss up". Smeltzer time was a PR by 7 seconds, even after having a stress fracture during the summer. When asked about her performance she said "I'm ecstatic". This was the only loss of the season for Lefave. She also had a close finish at the Michigan State Invitational, but in that race she was the one that went home the winner. Lafave will race next at the Midwest Footlocker Regional in Wisconsin. Hopefully in 2006 these two will put on another exciting race.

Top Five Teams: Grand Rapids Christian, Grand Rapids South Christian, Grand Rapids Forest Hills North, East Lansing, and Chelsea

Top Five Individuals: Bekah Smeltzer, Erin LaFave, Brooke Eilers, Jazmine Ford, and Tereseann Zimmerman

Update #8:
D1 Girls, Race Time: 3:00 p.m.

The Clarkston girls won their third straight Division 1 Girls MHSAA Cross Country title. Clarkston edged out Okemos and Rockford with a score of 123 to Okemos' 138 and Rockford's 140. Clarkston was led by sister's Jenny Morgan in 4th and Stephanie Morgan in 6th. The rest of Clarkston's top 5 were Lyndsay Smith in 32nd, Kristen Smith in 57th and and Jenna Leach in 66th.

Individually senior Eileen Creutz of Saline won her second individual title in a row and also ran the fastest time of the day, finishing in 17:41.05. She won by 6 seconds over Rockford's Katie Haines. Creutz who has been bothered by tendonitis for last two weeks has been cross training. She said "I didn't know what to expect today... I'm surprised I was able to run this fast." Grand Haven's Becca Addison ran 17:54.05 over taking Clarkston's Jenny Morgan (17:54.55) in the last straight away for 3rd place.

Top Five Teams: Clarkston, Okemos, Rockford, Livonia Churchill, and Traverse City Central

Top Five Individuals: Eileen Creutz, Katie Haines, Becca Addison, Jenny Morgan, and Courtney Calka
