The cruel and yet great thing about
cross country is that you have usually one race to prove
yourself. No matter what you do over the season, it all
comes down to how you perform on this one day. For Detroit
Catholic Central, ranked just fourth coming into the 2001
state meet, this was their day to prove themselves.
Catholic Central, lead by senior John Krawiec's fifth
place finish, ran well enough on the day to upset top
ranked Milford in a close team battle. Catholic Central
finished on top with 186 points to Milford's 205.
Also
placing in the top 10 for Catholic Central was sophomore
David Lucas, who finished 10th. Milford's top runner on
the day was senior Nick Kopczyk who placed 16th.
Third place in the team race went to Travserse City West,
while Grand Ledge and White Lake Lakeland rounded out
the top 5. Last year's team champion, Rockford, finished
the 2001 state finals in 18th place.
Although
some of the buzz of 2000 was definitely lacking without
the presence of Dathan Ritzenhein, the D-1 race was still
exciting to watch. Novi great Tim Moore was out to win
his first state title. Running a very similar type of
race that Caledonia's Tim Ross would in the D-2 race that
followed, Moore took the race out fast, leading after
the first mile in 4:38.
No
other runner was even close at this point. By the mile
and half, Ross was dominating the race. L'anse Creuse
North's Justin Zanotti was in second at this point, Matt
French of Howell in third, and Woodhaven's Jake Hammerle
fourth.
At
the two mile mark, Moore still held a comanding lead,
coming through in 9:35. Only Zanotti and French were under
10:00 at the two mile mark as they could only watch Moore
pull away even further.
As
the finish approached, Moore was showing the signs of
his early fast start as he started to falter somewhat
coming down the stretch. However, despite a slow finishing
kick, Moore had plenty to hold on for the victory. His
time of 15:11 was the second fastest on the day. Tim Ross
ran the best time of the day with his 15:03 in the race
that followed.
Probably
the smartest race of the Division 1 race was turned in
by Woodhaven senior Jake Hammerle, who wet out in a relatively
tame 4:55 and came through the second mile in 10:03. This
left him with a great kick as he passed both Zanotti and
French and ended up second in 15:35.
