Why should you run the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank International Marathon presented by Casino Windsor this October 21st? This is the question new race director Patricia Ball wants all Michigan and Ontario runners to ask themselves as they prepare for a Fall Marathon.
With a diverse and exciting course, Detroit/Windsor ranks as one of the best venues for traversing 26.2 miles. Marathon and Beyond Magazine rated only six North American marathons higher. For the last few years the course has evolved to showcase some of the best panoramic views that the two cities have to offer.
Much has changed to make this a marathon you should return to or choose for your first marathon experience. The Marathon committee is now made up of experienced volunteers and runners that have been around for years. The two combine to offer close ties to the running community and a level of expertise about which few other marathons can boast. They understand what runners want from a race weekend and they are very passionate about making the event a grass roots production that will become the word of mouth place to be this Fall.
Patricia is determined to get the running, resident, church and business communities to support this event. Already she has the United Way Community Services committed to organizing "Morale Stations" every mile to give the runners a good shot of mental energy. Both corporations and non-profit organizations will give the stations a new level of enthusiasm. She is also working to involve Detroit area high schools in bringing out bands to entertain runners. It's Patricia's goal to have a 26.2 "wall of community support" out on the course.
Runners are being challenged to support Michigan's premier marathon rather than go out of state. "It's time to be loyal to your hometown and share in its success and resurgence. The event is a demonstration of hope in action" according to Ms. Ball. As Detroit celebrates its 300th anniversary it is an opportunity for marathon runners to participate in the "acknowledgement" of Detroit's history.
First timers and recent finishers can also bear witness to the involvement of U.S. and Canadian immigration and customs. The event has been fortunate to have their support. It signifies unity between the two cities and honors the importance of the marathon and accomplishment of its athletes. These two organizations along with the International Bridge and Tunnel Corporations bring to our cities a uniqueness that no one else in America or Canada can match.
Tip of the Week: Always keep a water bottle close by to keep you hydrated. Try using Gatorade or a sports drink that the marathon is using during your long runs.
Upcoming Race of the Week: The YMCA is celebrating 150 years of its movement in America. To commemorate this they are sponsoring the YMCA World's largest Run at many of their locations. All the runs (5km race and walk) will be conducted the morning on June 2nd. Please call your local YMCA for more information.
