In Training Programs

In training programs for the Detroit
Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon will begin during May and June. Nine running specialty shops at more
then eighteen locations, covering Michigan and parts of Ontario, will be offering
programs to get runners ready for the marathon on October 6.
If youre a first time marathoner
these training programs are especially helpful in preparing you the race. It's an opportunity to learn how to get
the most out of your training and truly make the whole experience
extraordinary. Most programs offer weekly runs from one of the stores and
provide you with a preparation guide based on your fitness and ability. The
programs vary from several clinics to orientation programs with monthly seminars. All offer advice from store employees,
many of whom have run marathons, to guest speakers with expertise in injury
prevention, nutrition, training and racing equipment, women's concerns and
training schedules. Some offer T-shirts or racing singlets to identify you with
their program.
In addition to the weekly runs, many
of the shops will be offering organized long runs in September. Some stores and
local running clubs will be organizing runs on portions of the 2002 marathon
course. It's a great way to visualize
yourself completing the distance.
The Crim, one of Michigan's most
popular and competitive events, offers a training program that some runners use
to help them with their marathon preparation as well.
Another
program that has begun in Ann Arbor is based on the USA
FIT national marathon training program. Runners are assigned to one of four
different training pace groups with a coach. They are also given weekly
training schedules and web based individual training. The 26 week program has
weekly speakers, refreshments and includes a T Shirt and identification system.
To sign up online visit www.usafit.com or
call 734-629-0478.
While local running
clubs don't offer training programs they are a good place to meet and run with
other runners who have completed marathons. The Free Press marathon web site
has a listing of running clubs in Michigan and Ontario. To find out more about any of the
training programs and a location near you, go to the site at: www.freep.com/marathon and click on
runner info and then in training.
Tip of the Week: The most important equipment a
runner requires is a good pair of running shoes. First time runners often buy
shoes that are too small. Your local running specialty shop has experts to help
you determine which shoe has the correct motion control, stability and weight
to prevent injuries during your training.
