For more than a decade Turkey Trots have been one of the most popular running events. Over the next week, four will be held in Michigan. The oldest, Detroit's Thanksgiving Day Parade Run will be celebrating its 19th year. One in Lansing and another in Glen Lake are planning their debut.
Detroit's Thanksgiving Turkey Trot is the State's largest 10k run with over 5,000 competitors each year. Because of downtown construction the race and the Thanksgiving Parade have moved from their usual routes. This year the race starts and finishes on Wayne State University's campus at the Matthaei Building by the athletic fields. Only miles 3 and 4 will be on the actual parade route.
According to Ed Kozloff, Detroit's race director, "the Trot's have become many runner's way of beginning the Holiday Season, much like the Thanksgiving Parade begins it for the general public. While there is always a group of fast runners at the front, most of the field simply enjoys the Parade atmosphere and the crowd. Many runners take the opportunity to wear costumes and interact with spectators on the route."
Overall winners are also invited to stand on a float and be part of the parade.
Lansing's Chuck Block, who has directed several fund raising races, has received the approval to shut down part of Michigan Ave. and Grand River in the heart of Lansing for its race. The new course will pass in front of the Capital building and finish along the scenic Lansing River Trail. All the proceeds from the event will go back to the local youth running groups at the High School and College level.
Not far from the Sleeping Bear Dunes you will find another new Turkey Trot. It's actually a cross country run to benefit Glen Lake Cross Country teams. According to director Daniel Siderman, the race will feature "Baked goods at the finish line, give aways, a dozen frozen turkeys to be raffled off and useful merchandise awards instead of those silly trinkets."
So, if you want to start your Thanksgiving season off in a healthy way or just want an excuse to eat more at the dinner table sign up for some fun racing while the weather is still nice.
Tip of the Week: Balance is the key to a good diet. Find the foods that work for you and don't deny yourself that chocolate cake after a long run.
